Montenegro's food traditions are influenced by Turkish, Italian, Slavic and Mediterranean traditions. They eat a lot of seafood, meat, cheese and vegetables. The national dish is Njegusi proscitto, which is thinly sliced bacon that is served as a symbol of hospitality and respect. Njegusi prosciutto is originally from Cetinje, the old capital of Montenegro. The ham is served cold and is often served with olives, fresh figs, honey and a dollop of mayonnaise.
